My name is Naima Omar, a recent graduate from Mogadishu University with a degree in Social Work. In 2022, I was a Field Research intern at RAAGSAN Consulting for a memorable two-month period. The experience deepened my understanding of my field and unexpectedly touched my heart.
Throughout my internship, I got to see and learn about all the modern work systems, how to work with people, understand policies and regulations, work efficiently, and create a work-life balance. I also had the opportunity to have firsthand experience interacting with communities. This experience awakened all my senses and opened my eyes to the reality of my society. You can’t see and understand a culture if you don’t interact with it.
Undoubtedly, the field research was a highlight of my journey. The training in data collection proved invaluable, empowering me to engage with community members confidently. Admittedly, my initial interactions were nerve-wracking, but the more I interacted with communities, the more I overcame my fears, established rapport, and conducted meaningful interviews. Each week, my confidence grew, refining my ability to convey and gather information effectively.
One of the most profound takeaways from my time at RAAGSAN was bridging the gap between theory and practice. Despite my academic prowess, it was only through community interactions that I truly comprehended the challenges Somali communities face. Furthermore, the training in writing skills improved my English language proficiency and unleashed my creativity, elevating my writing and speaking abilities. The weekly field reflection reports made me a more confident English writer and speaker.
The exposure to experts from diverse fields enriched my understanding, and the lessons on life coaching and punctuality resonated deeply. These talks reinforced the value of showing up on time for work commitments, assignments, and deadlines – a lesson that will stay with me well beyond this internship. My internship at RAAGSAN Consulting has been nothing short of transformative. It’s a chapter in my life that’s molded me into a more compassionate, insightful, and skilled social work enthusiast. And as I step forward into my future endeavors, I’m armed with the invaluable experiences and lessons that RAAGSAN has bestowed upon me.
