I’m Mohamed Abdullahi Omar, a proud graduate of Mogadishu University’s class of 2022 with a bachelor’s in social work. Stepping into the professional world, I realized there was much to learn about the dynamic job market, and my perspective shifted profoundly upon joining RAAGSAN.
My time at RAAGSAN wasn’t just an internship but an opportunity to grow, learn, and make meaningful connections. The team at RAAGSAN welcomed me warmly, creating an environment that fostered growth. We were privileged to undergo comprehensive training tailored to our field. The guidance of experts equipped us with essential skills, including effective writing and research methodologies. One of the highlights of my journey was the chance to engage with guest speakers and professionals from various government agencies. Together, we delved into the social issues that communities face and matters of policy and governance. My most memorable interaction was with Mohamed Irbad, a governance expert who discussed social protection programs and their impact on Somali communities while understanding the political context that ensures success for social programs. These interactions broadened my horizons and humanized the challenges we aim to address as social work practitioners.
Moreover, I was introduced to electronic data collection tools like KOBO Collect and ONA. Learning to efficiently gather data from the field was a pivotal lesson. We also had sessions where we reflected on the data collection process, enabling us to grasp the community’s perspectives on critical research areas. This direct engagement added a layer of empathy to our work, grounding us in the real experiences of the people we strive to support.
Through this internship, I sharpened both my personal and professional skills. The experience improved my communication, allowing me to connect with diverse individuals effectively. I also got to collaborate with colleagues who emphasized the value of teamwork, time management, and multitasking to boost productivity. The internship fostered my critical thinking and innovative problem-solving skills while equipping me to apply knowledge gained in real-world situations. I also learned networking skills where I engaged with professionals and peers, enabling me to establish connections beyond my time at RAAGSAN.
My time at RAAGSAN Consulting has equipped me with vital skills and transformed my perspective on social work. This journey has been one of self-discovery, growth, and human connection, and I am excited to carry these lessons forward as I continue my path in the realm of social work.
